German Clothes

In the earlier times of Germany the clothes German people wore told of their status in society. Colors, types of fabrics and clothing styles all depended on economic and social status.

Up until the beginning of the 16th century German farmers and other lower class laborers wore grey and brown colored clothes. The German working class wore these types of clothing and these types only with the exception of some Sundays and holidays. On the occasion of holidays and Sunday worship, blue colored clothes were allowable for German laborers and their families to wear.

At the start of the 16th century there were two types of clothes for both the German upper and lower classes. These types of clothes were those used for everyday work and much more festively styled clothes for Sunday services. German clothes were produced two ways, either one at a time by an individual tailor or in a more mass produced environment. With the onset of the 19th century the more assembly line type of creating German clothes grew more and more popular. Natural materials began to become more scarce as did the attention to fine details made by individual tailors in favor of the less expensive mass production of garments.
