German Castles

There are numerous historic castles scattered through German cities and countryside. From the most famous rulers of Germany to the very upper crust of German high society, a tour through any one of Germany's fine castles will be a very rich lesson in the history of this fine country. The following are two of the more notable German castles that tourists and locals alike are able to explore.

The Heidelberg castle located in the German town of Schloss can be reached either a scenic ride on a mountain railway or by a short stroll through the city.. This history filled German castle was constructed in several phases starting in the 14th century to the final touches performed in the 17th century. The princes of Palatinate called the Heidelberg Castle home for well over five hundred years. An assault by French military forces in the late 1600's brought the town of Schloss as well as this fine example of German architecture to ruins. Today guided tours are hosted throughout the castle several times daily and should you decide to visit in the summertime you can witness a spectacular fireworks display.

Probably the most fabulous and the most well known of King Ludwig's castles is the Neuschwanstein Castle. With gorgeous gothic and medieval styled interiors this German castle could truly be straight out of a fairytale. The Neuschwanstein Castle was constructed somewhere between the year 1869 and 1886 with actually only about a third of the castle being completed. On one of the guided tours taking place in the castle today you will marvel at the incredible attention to detail in the fifteen rooms available for viewing.

There are many more German castles readily available for exploration during your next vacation. A simple search on the internet or trip to a local travel agent will give you all the information you should need to fully enjoy each one that you plan to visit.
